| Land rights in Australia. Brief history of Australia; in the 18th century America won its independence from England and no more could England send prisoners to America. The only option they had was to send the prisoners to a land far far away from England on the other side of the world. In England if you stole a loaf bread then you were sent to prison. The jails were so over crowded that they had to put them in old ships. |
||
A
fleet of ships stocked with prisoners took about six months to arrive
on the shore of Australia and stuck the British flag on the ground and
declared this new land a part of England. Though for thousands of years
a race had occupied this land, they didn't built houses or roads but they
roamed the land freely. The British looked down on them as just natives
who were not as civilised as the British so they just took the land. |
||
The
land was then given out to other Europeans and were allowed to drive away
the natives including killing. Some people bought the land or the government
gave it away for free. The natives roamed the land and also maintain the
land by preventing forest fires which is a serious problem in Australia.
But in the eyes of the British they were just savages. Many natives were
killed because of the farmers or government driving them away off the
land. |
||
That
was two hundred years ago and Australians disapprove of the British and
how they treated the natives and other cultures. For all Australians this
is their home and it is too late for them to go back to any other country.
The natives for quite awhile have been fighting for the right to be given
land but some of that land had belong to people for last two hundred years. |
||
| Do
you believe that land that had been owned by farmers for so long should
be given back to the natives despite the financial lose to those farmers? |
Or
do you believe that is too late and whatever had happened is far too long
ago in the past? |
|
| What
the British did back then was a criminal act and if this was done today
the United Nations would declare it a crime against human rights. |
The
people today should not be judged on what their ancestors did in the past. |
|
| The
natives are people who can survive well in the forest and in the desert
without harming the environment. They can also protect the environment
and prevent large forest fires. |
The
natives can join the rest of the population and be part of a modern society
and live a good life. |
|
| For
many natives they want to live a traditional life because they choose
to keep their own culture. |
Native
culture is popular to people overseas and they can make a lot of money
selling it and with tourism. |
|
| The
farmers should give up their land and the government should give those
farmers compensation. |
The
farmers have been making a living from the land and also the farms feed
the country. |
|
| The
Australian population is not large so most people can live in the cities
and let the natives roam the country, |
A
lot of people do not want to live in the large cities and have been living
in the country for their whole life. Their family history has always been
in the country. |
|
| The
Australian government should make an apology to the natives for the crimes
of the past. |
Australians
are not all descendents of the British and the apology should actually
come from the queen. |
|
Europeans
believed they could sail to any country and if the people were not as
advanced in technology they could claim their country to be their new
found land. In your opinion what would happen if a country found a new
land and the people were still natives and they decidied to take their
land? How would the United Nations react to this and how would the media
report this in the news? |
